ENDORSEMENTS

The manager who oversaw me this summer was one of the best mentors I've had for anything I've tried to learn, he allowed me to go out on my own and do what many would not have been allowed to on their own. Like our own class discussions he attempted to promote safe speaking of one's values to all we came across in the areas we were sent to campaign in. The office was similar to the Marshmallow Challenge in the sense there were so many walks of life in the office that is sometimes made it hard to unify ourselves but luckily we still recognized the common goal. This I believe made us so successful in made us both feel a real sense of accomplishment when the election passed. He made my summer of working and interning feel not like a constant barrage of to-do's but instead helped me to fight off the feeling of resentment for the everyday battle. Trying to register people to vote and influence the minds of random individuals on the street is a daunting task with a lot of negative responses, "We won't always win our battles. So no matter what happens, we need to avoid berating ourselves for what we should've done or what we did wrong" ("Coping With Burnout").

This video speaks to a lot of the work that I did with Scott and the DPVA this past summer. Working to register as many of the former felons to vote who had their voting rights restored by Terry McAuliffe's executive order. We spent many days walking the streets of Richmond trying to talk to and connect with as many people as we could in hopes of getting them out to the polls in November. The NVC article discusses a space of compassion as, "...where there are no judgements, no right or wrong, no demands, no punishments or rewards... only people trying to get their needs met in the best way they know how..." ("An Introduction to Nonviolent Communication", 2015, p. 6). This was the type of environment Scott encouraged as we tried to build a strong community base and ultimately it was one of the key difference maker in a very close state.
